You’ll leave this session with the firm’s position on AI on one page, ready for the partners to sign off.
Who it’s for
Firms where AI keeps getting raised at partners’ meetings, but nobody ever quite agrees what to do about it. Some partners want to try everything, some would rather it went away, and the conversation starts from scratch every time a new tool comes up.
It works best with the people who’ll make the call: the managing partner, the COO and the partners.
What happens
Before the session, I send a short questionnaire to everyone attending. It asks how they feel about AI, what they’ve seen being used, and what worries them. Answers are anonymous, so people can be honest.
In the session, we look at what the questionnaire showed, then work out where the firm wants to sit. A lot of firms feel like they’ve got no choice but to use AI, but you’ve got more say in it than it might seem. So we start with what matters to the firm: the work you’re known for, how you look after clients, and how the partners want to run the place. There’s no right answer. Some firms will use AI wherever it helps, others will do the bare minimum, and plenty sit somewhere in between.
From there, we agree what the firm will and won’t use AI for, which tools can be used for which work, and who decides on anything new.
Afterwards, I write it up on one page for the partners to sign off.
What you leave with
- A one-page position on AI, written up for sign-off
- Which tools can be used for which work
- Who decides on new AI tools and requests, and how
- The questionnaire and the template, so you can revisit the position yourselves each year or when something changes

Why me
I don’t mind what your firm’s position on AI is. I just want it to fit how the partners want to run the firm, and to be based on an accurate picture of what the technology can actually do. I’ve spent about ten years building AI products, and at NatWest I co-founded and later chaired the AI ethics board, so I’ve been part of plenty of conversations where people disagree about how far to go. You can read more about where I stand on AI, or more about me.
What comes next
If you don’t yet know what AI is already in use, Where is AI used in your firm? is a good place to start. Once the position is agreed, One answer for clients turns it into what the firm says when clients ask.
If you run a professional body or a group of firms, this session also runs as a webinar.
